Velo Club Montpellier - Coming To A Road Near You!

Wednesday 20th February 2008 played witness to the official media launch of Velo Club Montpellier at the exclusive venue of Monty's cocktail bar, Cheltenham. Velo Club Montpellier is the area's first racing orientated cycling club based in the exclusive area of Montpellier, Cheltenham. The team currently has 23 members most of whom race competitively in National and Regional races throughout the Country. Four main sponsors have helped set up the team in its first year - Dataform, jSolutions, mcinnes Communications and CPLC Associates.

The launch at Monty's cocktail bar was a great success and included VIP guest and Great Britain rider, Jess Varnish, current European Junior Track champion and one of Britain's strongest hopes of Gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The focus at Velo Club Montpellier is on racing and their structure and organisation has been based on that of a stylised continental team. This is evident in their distinctive race clothing which has been made in Italy and exclusive leisure clothing.

Team riders have already shown their talents. Two of the Team's biggest riders, Wayne Coombs and Colin Mattinson, both claimed superb top 20 placings in the 70km Perf's Pedal Road Race held in Hampshire. This also earned pictorial coverage for the team in national cycling press. The race is steeped in history and is widely considered as the official start of the UK road racing season.

Many other members of Velo Club Montpellier have also been racing competitively. Notably, Roy Jones took the first win for the Team in Cardiff after a crash marred race. Ex-Olympic Bronze medallist Graham Brookhouse and strongman Stuart Hopkins have also both taken classy second places for the team over the last month.

These early season races have demonstrated that the team has a wealth of talent that is prospering. The Team's main targets for 2008 include placings in Premier Calendar races (courtesy of Wayne Coombs, Colin Mattinson and Neil Biggs). This will hopefully included such races as the Tour of Wessex in its first year. For the remainder of the team targets include the Ras de Cyrmu stage race in Wales, the Shimano 24 hour race and National Elite and Regional races throughout the country.

The team will also be fielding riders in sportive events internationally. Notably, Kevin Booth will be participating in the four day Tour of Ireland and Iain McInnes will also be participating the charity event, Ride 4 Hope across America, which has an overall distance of 3000 miles.

The team will also be aiming to promote cycling events in 2008 and beyond. Its aim is to promote cycle sport and the Montpellier area of Cheltenham. For all news and sponsorship inquiries, please visit the team's website www.vcmontpellier.com which is updated daily.
